Books Books Books!!

I read SOOO many good books this year and its going to be very hard to choose the best two...and here they are!

Chasing Orion by Kathryn Lasky:

Chasing Orion is set in Indiana in 1952 during a spread of polio. Eleven year old Georgie is telling the story, and at first she is frustrated with polio as all the swimming pools and movie theatres are closing. Despite all the headlines in the paper, Georgie never thought she’d come as close to the fearful disease as she does when she spies a silver glint in her neighbor’s yard. There she discovers a monstrous, hissing machine, and inside is Phyllis, a girl encased in an iron lung. "I have eighty-seven cubic centimeters of air, but you have the world," Phyllis tells her. Phyllis may not be able to breathe without the help of the iron lung, but her strength to manipulate is terrifying. Slowly Phillis weaves a web of lies that snare Georgie and Georgies brother Emmet too. Will Georgie discover Phyllis's false pretences or will it be too late? Read it to find out!

I liked this story because I love history and the polio epedemic was a period of history I hadn't learnt much about!

Rosie and Skate by Beth Bauman:

Rosie and Skate is acctually the book I picked out for the blind book challenge! And it was really good so that just goes to show that a book you might never have picked out for yourself might actually be pretty good! Rosie and Skate is set on the Jersey Shore after all the tourists have packed up and left. Rosie and Skate are sisters, and the story alternates between both of them speaking. The girls father is an alchoholic and is in jail for shoplifting. While Skate refuses to speak to her father, Rosie goes to visit him in prison every sunday. This novel includes heartbreak, courage, and standing up for what you believe in.

I liked this book because it was the kind of topic you never really think somebody will discover and write about!

So - which book do you think sounds better? Which one would you like to read?

Moving on to...

College! Its a sad time when we have to move onto college ... and then suddenly, people are asking you,
"So what are you going to do in the world?" and the thing is, you DON'T KNOW YET! Its a time for moving on, and I am going on to college with Sarah L, Amelia, Amanda, Jess, Monica, Nima and Alice! Amanda and Amelia and I are going to be train buddies and catch the train together! Woop woop!

So...yup!

Are you excited to be going to college? Or nervous? Or upset? Why?!?!!

My Speech!

Hey everybody!
Today I did my speech on laughter! I was so nervous that I had to start hyperventilating. I did my beggining a bit too fast, but other than that I hope it went okay! People actually laughed at the joke - now that was a miracle in itself! I think I didn't do too bad although I used no hand gestures and went WAAY to fast! Do you think my speech went okay? Or did it completely suck? And what was your speech about? Did YOURS go okay? I hope it did!!

Hobbies!

Howdy! Well today we have to write about a hobby, so I shall be choosing to write about . . .  eating cake sprinkles!! No - joking. Although I do love cake sprinkles on toast! One of my hobbies is to read! I have lots of other hobbies, (Don't worry - I'm not completely sad,) But reading is one of the best! Its great to just lose yourself in another world. So - what is your BEST BOOK EVER?!?! What is it called? Where did you read it? Where is it from? I' m kind of hoping someone will reply "I found it in the middle of the forest with a wolf print on the cover!" or "In the middle of a dark, vampire infested castle!" or even, "Thrown at me through my bedroom window!" Oh well. So REPLY! REPLY! To my question.

Guy Fawkes Night!

Hooray!! It's Guy Fawkes night tonight! Time to let off those sky rockets and wave those sparklers! Even though I am a terrible baby when it comes to fireworks, (Yes, I scream and hide behind people,) I am interested in Guy Fawkes because it is a celebration of a HISTORICAL EVENT. And also, I really like sparklers.

The History:
Four hundred years ago, this guy called Guy Fawkes and his mates attempted to blow up London's Houses of Parliment by placing gun powder barrels in the basement. They wanted to kill King James because he didn't like Catholics. The very idea!! Well, obviously, the plot was foiled and Guy Fawkes was killed. :(
In celebration of his survival, King James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night on the 5th of November to celebrate him surviving. Now, most people have fireworks too. Yaay!!

Something New!

We have been doing something new in class . . . doing our own timetables! We get given a timetable with a few blank spaces on each day, and fill them in! Its a little confusing, but if everyone likes it we can continue it for the rest of the year! I will keep up with the work on my timetable and make sure I do all of it. There is a fitness roster now too for our fitness games outside. Argh!! I'll have to remember that too!!
